Creepy-Crawly Poetry -
Pond Skaters
These insects live on the surface film of fresh water such as lakes, streams, ditches and ponds. They spread their legs out evenly and disperse their weight allowing them to literally 'walk on water' - although to the naked eye they appear to be gliding or skating. They are fast-moving predators and feed on any insect unlucky enough to fall into the water. Motion-sensitive hairs on the pond skater's legs alert them to the struggling, frantic movements of their drowning prey. Then they zoom in for the kill.
Sk8er Bug
Hey pond skater, skating about
on the surface of the pond.
Hey pond skater, how do you do it,
do you have a magic wand?
Hey pond skater, skating about
like you're on some kind of rink.
Hey pond skater, what's the secret,
why is it that you don't sink?
Hey pond skater, skating about
on the surface of the lake.
Hey pond skater, are you for real,
or is the whole thing fake?
Hey pond skater, skating about
with your feet floating on the water.
Hey pond skater, is it just a trick,
that an illusionist once taught yer?
Hey pond skater, skating about
on the surface of the pool.
Hey pond skater, what's the story,
how do you look so cool?
